How to Become an Instructor
In order to be eligible to take the Instructor Exam you have to have been a licensed barber for 18 months. Reach out to the school in your area to set up a meeting to determine availability. (Schools are allowed only two student instructors at any given time).
As a Barber Student Instructor (BSI) you are required to work in a Kentucky licensed barber school under a head instructor 400 hours before taking the Written, Practical and Oral portions of the Instructor's Examination. You must pass each exam with 80% or better to qualify for licensure as a Barber Instructor (BI).
Instructor Written Examinations are given monthly as needed during regularly scheduled examinations.
Practical and Oral exams are scheduled where scheduling permits during regular barber testing, or if possible, an additional testing day may be added when multiple candidates request testing. (minimum of 3 for a special testing day).
Once you pass the exams
You are qualified to teach as a regular instructor at a school.
To be a qualifying senior instructor (required for a new school) you must work as an instructor in a school licensed by our Board for a year.
